



Belfast Gum Disease
How will the Belfast dentist treat the gum disease?
If periodontal probing discloses the presence of a pocket depth greater than 3 mm, it is sure you have a periodontal disease. At this stage, the disease in its early stage which can be cured or and retarded if correct treatment is given.
Following treatments are offered by Belfast dentist ---
Scaling and root planning ---
it is a deep-cleaning treatment and it requires 3 - 4 visits to the Belfast dentist within a period of 14 days

- The Belfast dentist uses the therapy which uses threads and gels containing antibiotics. These are inserted into the space between the tooth and gum after the procedure of deep cleaning, these continuously fight the plaque.
Surgery ---
after your scaling and planning procedure, if it is found on the follow up that the pocket depths is still above 3mm, then the Belfast dentist will choose surgical options to minimize ---
- The pocket size
- Remove diseased tissue
- Reshape / regenerate gum and/or bone tissue.
The surgical options will be as follows ---
1. Pocket depth reduction or flap surgery
- The Belfast dentist gives local anaesthesia.
- Through small incisions the gum is lifted back to expose the tooth and the bone.
- The Belfast dentist cleans the entire area, removes tartar and infected tissues present.
- If found necessary, the bone tissue is recontoured. It allows the gum to heal quickly.
- The gums are sutured in the place to cover the bone.
The procedure is completed in 1 - 3 hours.
2. Tissue regeneration or soft tissue graft ---
The Belfast dentist will use the following surgical methods if due to gum disease ---
- Either your gums are found damaged,
- Or the bone supporting the teeth is found destroyed.
(a) For damaged gum –
- The Belfast dentist will get a soft tissue graft from your palate and will sews it to the damaged area in order to prevent further recession of the gum. This graft also covers exposed roots. As a result further decay is stopped. The teeth become less sensitive to hot or cold liquids and foods.
(b) For damaged bone --

3. Crown lengthening --
